Celebrate love, transformation, and community this summer in Shakespeare’s joyous comedy, As You Like It, in the Globe Theatre from 18 August.

The Forest of Arden. Rosalind and Celia are on the run and in disguise; Orlando is pinning his impassioned attempts at poetry to branches; Oliver is seeing fantastical visions of strange beasts.

From the loyal love between family to the sudden love of strangers, and from the vicious love between enemies to the desperate love of remorse, journey into the forest as we embark on a transformative adventure. Who knows what – or who – we might find?

I found this production of As You Like It disappointing. The cast were seemingly trying to deliver the play a la Shakespears time by not using modern technology such as microphones etc but then went on to dress in costumes in no way related to the period, added in modern song and dance lyrics etc. Then to top it off, stand ins were used (no such things as understudies apparently) who proceeded to read their lines. All in all, we felt like we had attended a local amateur production with cobbled together costumes, actors whose voices didn't project to the back of the theatre and who were unprepared. So no, we didn't feel like it was value for money because we felt that what we got for the big bucks was entry to the globe theatre and a poorly presented production. If the advertising had indicated that this was an avant guard production of the play we would have chosen another play to see

It was fantastic. The setting was amazing, the actors were brilliant. It was so well performed, and very funny. The only down side was there were lots of students who seemed bored and more intent on messing around then watching. The stewards were busy !!

Much of the acting was exceptionally good. By and large, we enjoyed the play, but it was marred by what I can only describe as perverse decisions about casting and costume. I had believed that 'gender fluid' performances had had their day at The Globe. Sadly, however, we were treated to a wilful confusion of gender roles. I do not believe these were seen in Shakespeare's performances and I do not believe their representation in the Globe performance is representative of modern society as a whole. Of course, female parts were taken by boys with unbroken voices in Shakespeare's day (albeit that voices broke at an older age then so the acting may well have had a surprising maturity.) That was unfair to women and, by modern standards very wrong. But female parts at least sounded like females and there were undoubtedly additional comedic opportunities available. There are, of course, comedic elements of cross dressing in Shakespeare's script for As You Like It. The above said, nonsensical decisions in the Globe production rendered an already complex plot ridiculously confusing. A majority of the male parts was assigned to women and one of the female parts was assigned to a man with a clearly broken voice. The result was a horrible mess of confusion over gender and a distortion of the well understood intentions of Shakespeare's play. Whilst the LGBTQ (etc.) community is doing well to normalise members' acceptance in modern life, the grotesque emphasis given to these matters in the Globe version of As You Like It did nothing to enhance or enrich the play. For us, and several members of the audience around us, it confused, distorted and annoyed. Then there was the music. There was nothing whatever 'authentic' about that. The use of a harmonium, a guitar and a double bass rocked the boat much too much. There were some pleasant but unremarkable interludes, and a bit of ethnic drumming, but little to justify the small band's presumably expensive existence. The inclusion of popular songs from the modern era was popular with the audience but nothing to do with Shakespeare. There is plenty of accessible and entertaining music from Shakespeare's time. There is, of course, a long history of updating these elements but with considerably better pedigree than the random and lightweight fare to which we were treated. In my view, there is little to commend a performance in a good replica of Shakespeare's Globe which does so little to represent the spirit and characteristics of Shakespeare's play. This is such a pity for the largely excellent actors. I shall research the production principles of Globe productions more carefully in future. The concept of As You Like It was deeply disappointing. It would possibly be received well in a cheap open-air theatre in a park but it does not belong in Shakespeare's Globe. Under the present management, I shall be unlikely to visit again. Most disappointing and not to be recommended.

Playful, joyous production of this classic!

Terrible production . Poor characterisation with most actors barely able to enunciate or project their lines. A burlesque mockery of one of the Bard’s funniest works! Globe managers- please be much more discerning when selecting theatre companies to perform on your world renowned stage!
